The Magic In The Receiver – A Kefalonia Novel

About

Set on the beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia, this vivid family saga is lit with memorable characters: a man revisiting the haunting site of a childhood earthquake, and his American-born daughter who faces a decision that could change her life.

The story centers around three timelines; the present (main theme), four days prior (the festival of Saint Gerasimos), and August 9-12, 1953 (the Kefalonian earthquakes).

Festival of Saint Gerasimos

Each year, expats from around the world return to the island to honor Gerasimos, the Patron Saint of Kefalonia. It’s quite a spectacle. Gerasimos was a 16th century monk, originally from the Peloponnese, who settled in Kefalonia and founded a monastery. After death, his body never decomposed. During the festival, the mummified saint is paraded around the monastery and “passes over” pilgrims who lie, in line, on the ground. Depending on your beliefs, incorruptibility is either a natural or supernatural phenomenon. In the novel, the monk’s interaction with the young boy is also ambiguous and can be interpreted either way.

I tried to make the island of Kefalonia a virtual character. Although the book was written in Los Angeles, I felt, at times, that I was physically back in Greece. I hope you’ll enjoy THE MAGIC IN THE RECEIVER, and visit the Ionian Islands soon.
